CULTURAL MATERIALS CONSERVATION

Daniel Bornstein, Cultural Materials Conservator, 2021

I am a cultural materials conservator, which means that my job is to manage the enduring cultural relevance of objects or intangible practices through changes of state, or through the unyielding march of time. I believe that promoting public ownership and accessibility to cultural heritage helps others to enrich their perspective on life.

I am currently a Conservator of Objects & Painted Surfaces at the National Museum of Australia, where I have also been Senior Large Technology Conservator, and Paper & Textiles Conservator. In the private sector I have managed photographic, paper and textile collections, as well as managing and maintaining large and functional technology collections relating to photography and letterpress printing.

I am passionate about driving community engagement and improvement within our industry. I am secretary of the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Materials (AICCM) ACT Chapter, was on the 2023 AICCM Conference Committee and, with Dr. Cancy Chu, am Chief Editor of the AICCM Bulletin scholarly journal. My Master’s thesis was in 3D imaging techniques relevant to cultural heritage, informed by my previous work in photography and heritage digitisation (including 2D and 3D capture). You can see a few of my 3D scans here.
